Wild! Tracking animals from space could predict earthquakes on the ground

Animals can sense natural disasters: Goats on Mount Etna in Sicily, for example, become anxious before major eruptions. Their movement profiles may provide warning of imminent eruptions in future.MaxCine/MPI f. Ornithology
From analyzing pulses in Earth’s magnetic field to detecting pressure waves in the ground, scientists have long sought a reliable means of predicting earthquakes — only to meet with limited success.
Now a team of researchers from 150 universities around the world are finalizing plans for an elaborate global initiative to see if the behavior of wild animals can form the basis of an effective earthquake early-warning system.
For centuries, there’s been anecdotal evidence suggesting that certain animals behave oddly in the hours leading up to an earthquake, apparently because they have some way of sensing when it is about to strike. Snakes are thought to flee their dens and become aggressive before a quake, for example, while flocks of birds appear to migrate off course.
“Initial scientific data on earthquakes suggest that some animals can sense these events hours in advance,” says Martin Wikelski, director of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, Germany, and leader of the International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space initiative, or Icarus. “If we can demonstrate this beyond a doubt, it has the potential to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the future. The problem with current earthquake sensing technologies is that they give you just a few seconds warning time.”
Over the past four years, Icarus scientists have fitted more than 10,000 animals including birds, bats, cows and flying foxes in quake-prone regions around the world with sensor-studded radio transmitters. The tiny devices will collect information about the animals and beam it to the International Space Station, which will then relay it to a lab at the institute for analysis.

Asia Cruise

If you are the kind of tourist who likes to visit places with outstanding landscapes and multicultural cities, then Asia is the place to go. This continent has a rich history and it’s where an action-loving tourist would go. There’s just too much going on for you to simply lay back and enjoy the sun. Take a cruise to Asia today and you will not be disappointed.
You will definitely be charmed by Asian cities such as Hong Kong & Singapore. The temples in Japan and Cambodia are a must visit for anyone who’s visiting. Plus, if you are the adventurous type, touring the rain-forests in Asia will prove to be more than satisfactory. Not to forget the Great Wall of China, and Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay.

The Finest Asian Cruise Expeditions

Tourists who want to visit several Asian countries understand that cruising there is the best alternative. You can decide to take a 2 week cruise, starting from Sri Lanka to Thailand. There’s also a three week cruise that starts off at China all the way to Japan. Any of these cruises will make you want to visit there again and again. A popular voyage is one that starts from Hong-Kong to Singapore.

The Best Time to Travel

When touring Asia it’s best to understand that different Cruise lines have different travelling timelines. Important information worth noting is that the rainy seasons in some Asian countries overlap the cruise timeline. Hence, you can expect some rain during your tour (October-December in Malaysia and December to February in Indonesia). Most cruises take place from December to the end of March.

Booking Cruise-ship Tours

Given that you’ll probably be taking long flights to get to South Asia and the Far East, the budget will be hefty, especially if you are visiting as a family. A lot of money is usually spent on air tickets. In addition, many people tour this region, so it would be best if you booked early when the prices are more appealing. If you have a flexible itinerary you could always go for late offers.

Some of the Best Cruise Lines in Asia

There’re several cruise lines operating here. Most of them have big ships that also cater for the local market. They include;
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean International
  • Holland America Line
  • Costa Cruises
  • Star Cruises
  • Cunard Cruises

Caribbean Cruise

The Caribbean Islands is one of the most remarkable places to visit. Cruising your way to this spectacular destination is a journey of a lifetime, the most ideal place to just relax and unwind (especially from January-June when it’s dry). There’re more than 700 Islands, cays, reefs and Islets in the Caribbean plate. Given that there is just so much to see and so many places to visit, planning is of the essence. The region has an exceptional marine and terrestrial ecosystem that is very diverse. Some Islands are evergreen, with mountains and rain-forests, while others have cactus scrublands and coral beaches.

The Finest Caribbean Cruise Expeditions

Whenever you sign up for a cruise line excursion in the Caribbean, you are automatically destined for great fun. That being said, most excursions are usually pricey especially if you intend to tour as a family. You end up paying extra so that everything is arranged conveniently for you in advance. Below are some useful tips you’ll need when planning your cruise, especially if you need to spend less.
Even though you cannot compare Caribbean ports to Mediterranean cruise ports, there are some distinguished ones to choose from. If you want to experience the old-Spanish ambiance there is the Old Havana in Cuba and Old San Juan (Puerto Rico). The cruise terminals of these ports are within walking distance so you can potter around on your own. Another beautiful, scenic port is in St George, Grenada.

Spending time on the Beach

When it’s hot and sunny in the Caribbean, there’s nothing more appealing than heading for the beach. Choose a cruise line that takes you to a strip of sand where you will enjoy a sun bath and relax. On the other hand, there are some Islands like St Lucia where you can just use a public bus since the ships dock near the central bus terminal. There’s also the option of using taxis, which can collect you from the cruise terminal and drive you across the south coast. You’ll probably spend around $25, which isn’t that expensive, plus you’ll come across many decent eateries with cheap food.

Booking Cruise-ship Tours

There are lots of cruise lines that you can choose from. Some of them include shore tours in their fees. The Viking cruises offers one shore tour at each port while the Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers several complimentary tours at every port.

There so much to do in the Caribbean, there’s also a lot of places to go sight seeing. A week’s tour isn’t enough even though it’s worth it. Enjoy snorkeling, zip lining, hiking and many other activities during your tour and always ensure that you use only certified operators.

What you need to know

For safety reasons, leave valuables in your cabin. Use an escorted tour if you can and never exchange a lot of cash, you don’t want to return home with lots of unwanted currency.

Leak detected aboard space station, but NASA says astronauts are safe

A leak was detected aboard the International Space StationWednesday night, but NASA said it was "minute" and posed no threat to the astronauts now aboard the station. "The crew is in no danger and is actively working troubleshooting procedures," the space agency said in a tweet.
The leak was detected around 7 p.m. EDT by flight controllers in Houston and Moscow. The controllers chose not to wake the astronauts, who were asleep at the time. This morning the astronauts gathered in the station's Russian segment, which is believed to be the source of the leak.
NASA gave no details on the cause of the leak, but the head of Russia's State Space Corporation, Dmitry Rogozin, told the Russian news agency Tass that it appeared to be in a side compartment of the Soyuz space capsule attached the the station.
"A micro-fracture was found," Rogozin said. "Most likely this is external damage. Designers believe this is the result of a micro-meteorite."

Trump admin may send captured ISIS fighters to Iraq prison, Guantanamo

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is weighing a plan to send hundreds of captured ISIS fighters to an Iraqi prison after other countries refused to take them, and to send several of the highest-value fighters to the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, according to five U.S. officials and two European diplomats.
The possible Guantanamo detainees include two ISIS fighters who participated in the murder of Americans and other Western hostages, say five U.S. officials. Alexandar Amon Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh were members of a group of four jihadis dubbed "The Beatles" by observers because of their British accents.
Detainees sent to Iraq would be held in Iraqi prisons with Iraqi guards, but the U.S. might retain the right to prosecute them if they could not be sent to their home countries, said officials.
Democrats in Congress and human rights groups oppose sending new detainees to Guantanamo and say those ISIS fighters suspected of murdering Americans should be tried in federal court, where they could be held accountable instead of held indefinitely without

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., worries that sending the militants to Guantanamo would potentially turn them into martyrs. She has called on the Trump administration to prosecute those suspected of killing Americans in federal civilian courts to ensure they face justice.
A spokesperson for Sen. Shaheen said she has advocated for the ISIS killers of journalist James Foley "to be tried in federal courts in accordance with the wishes of the Foley family."
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Judiciary Committee, wants to see the two "Beatles" sent to Guantanamo as a temporary move before a possible trial in a civilian court in the U.S., a series of moves that would be prohibited under existing law.
The prisoners who may be destined for Iraq or Cuba would be drawn from a group of about 600 currently held by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in a rebel-controlled area of Syria, say the officials. Many of the detainees are foreign fighters, and range from foot soldiers plucked off the battlefield to the highest value detainees who were tracked and captured with help from the U.S. military.

Buhari Nigeria deserves someone stronger than current President, Dele Momodu says

He said he'll support candidates that contest against the APC if Buhari emerges the party's flag bearer.

Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has vowed to campaign against President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election, noting that Nigeria deserves someone better than the 75-year-old president.

Momodu disclosed this on Monday, August 13, 2018, during a question and answer session on his Twitter account (@DeleMomodu).
When asked who he'll support next year, Momodu, a candidate in the 2011 presidential election, said he'll support candidates that contest against the All Progressives Congress (APC) if Buhari emerges the party's flag bearer.
He further went on to state that even though he wishes Buhari well, Nigeria deserves a stronger president.
He posted, "When the candidates emerge, I will proudly support one against APC, if BUHARI goes ahead to run... In a country of nearly 200m, I see and know a lot of vibrant candidates, young or old... If APC presents a different candidate, my choice may change but I won't follow sheepishly!
"I may support a fresh candidate in any party including APC... There is nothing personal about BUHARI other than that in his present state, which is due to no fault of his, Nigeria deserves someone stronger... I wish him well always..."

Buhari to run for re-election

The president ended months of speculation when he officially announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2019 presidential election during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the APC on April 9, 2018.
President Buhari made history when he defeated then-president, Goodluck Jonathan, in the 2015 presidential election by more than 2.5 million votes, the first time a sitting president lost an election in Nigeria.
He is expected to face a tougher test this time around as he has had to battle health complications that resulted in him seeking treatment for an undisclosed ailment in London for a combined 154 days in 2017.

Kill The Probe: CNN Poll Finds Two-Thirds Of Americans Want The Mueller Russia Investigation To End

Kill The Probe: CNN Poll Finds Two-Thirds Of Americans Want The Mueller Russia Investigation To End

Well, here’s some good news emanating from CNN: most Americans want the Mueller probe to end before the midterms. That also includes a majority of Democrats. For over a year, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who was appointed special counsel to oversee the Department of Justice’s collusion investigation, has been trying to find solid evidence that the Trump team and the Kremlin worked together to tilt the 2016 election. So far, there is zero evidence to suggest collusion occurred, but Democratic hysteria over the subject that taken its place. Trump won. Hillary lost. That’s the end of the story. And the Left’s overreach on this matter has been nothing short of embarrassing, with Democrats making absurd comparisons—like saying the attempted Russian interference (not hacking) was akin to Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 terror attacks. Yeah, thousands didn’t die from the 2016 election—and to make that suggesting because your side lost should earn you pervasive ridicule. Voters have had enough. No one cares about Russia outside of Washington D.C. and the newsrooms of the liberal media.  Everyone has moved on—which is exactly
Two-thirds of Americans, including majorities across party lines, would like to see special counsel Robert Mueller try to finish the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election before voters go to the polls to elect a new Congress this November.
[…]
Democrats are more apt than Republicans to think Mueller shouldn't aim to wrap it up before the elections (34% of Democrats say so vs. 24% of independents and 23% of Republicans), but majorities across parties say he ought to try to complete the investigation before voters head to the polls (72% of Republicans, 57% of Democrats and 69% of independents).
Is foreign interference in an election, which we have done numerous times in the Cold War era and the recent Israeli election, mind you, serious? Yes, who wouldn’t think it’s a serious issue, and we should prevent further intrusions, but vote counts weren’t altered. It was mostly a social media campaign loaded with trolls and shoddy Facebook ads, the costs of which were in the low six-figures. If you think that $100,000 in ads can wipe away American institutions, you’re insane. No, you’re insane anda sore loser. Even The Washington Postsaid it’s virtually impossible If there were solid evidence of collusion, we would have found out about it. If there were an infamous pee tape, we would have seen it by now. This collusion circus has been going on for over a year. The investigation's approval ratings due to people seeing that this is a wild goose chase. We’ve found nothing. It’s time to shut it

“I’ll Return Nigeria To Path Of Peace, Prosperity” – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to return the country to the path of peace and prosperity.
He also said it was wrong to blame leaders alone for the present state of affairs in the country. The President, who spoke at the graduation ceremony of Senior Course 40 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, assured of his administration’s efforts to take Nigeria to higher.
“May I assure you of this administration’s effort to return our country on the path of peace and prosperity,” he said. Buhari, who recalled his campaign promises during the last general elections, assured of his administration’s commitment to return the country to the path of peace and prosperity.
He said: “I made three key promises to Nigerians. First is to address the various security challenges facing our country; second, to reposition our economy and third to fight the serious challenge of corruption, which had eaten so deep into the very fabric that sustain our nation. “On the issue of security, we recognise that security challenges abound in all countries of the world, including Nigeria.
I am certain, with the consistent efforts of our security agencies; these challenges shall be considerably mitigated and minimized.” The President said the citizenry cannot be absolved of the blame as well in the nation’s woes. His words: “The change we desire in Nigeria actually starts with us as individuals. In Nigeria, there is the tendency to lay the blame for the state of affairs in the country on the doorsteps of leaders alone.
“Yes, leaders have a major role to play in providing direction and the enabling environment. However, the citizens’ role also is vital in attaining meaningful transformation of any society.” The President hailed the military for their sacrifice, saying: “Over the years, the Nigerian Armed Forces have provided the appropriate response to the numerous security challenges facing our country.
Their response to Boko Haram insurgency, militancy, kidnapping, activities of separatists and armed militias, amongst others, have been very commendable. “The military has also committed huge resources towards stability of the West African sub-region and world peace in general. Our efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, which stabilized the West African sub-region readily come to mind. More recently, our armed forces have also contributed to the peace in The Gambia, Mali and South Sudan.
“It, therefore, goes without saying that a force that is extensively committed to the maintenance of local, national, regional and world peace needs to be adequately prepared to confront security challenges as they emerge.” Buhari said his administration will give attention to training in the military. His words: “It is pretty obvious that our dear nation is having its fair share of security challenges.
However, it is important to reiterate that capacity building remains the bedrock of combat ready, effective and efficient military. Incidentally, our tri-service training institutions, especially the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, have been playing critical roles in this regard. “These institutions, as well as the single-service training institutions, must continue to be provided with the requisite support to enable them to discharge their obligations.
To this end, the Federal Government will continue to give priority to the training and welfare of officers and men of our armed forces. This is not only because we salute their courage and sacrifice for the safety and stability of our country, but because the armed forces of Nigeria have continued to be the bastion of our unity.”
The President also said he was delighted to observe that amongst the graduating students are 11 international officers from various African countries. He, therefore, called for partnership among African countries to tackle security challenges facing the continent.
